Lessons from a Monarch

By Joyline Chai · 15 January 2025

It took me four months to finish Sally Bedell Smith’s 700-page Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch. The reporting is careful. It makes a very public woman also understandable as a private one.

What stayed with me was not ceremony. It was the discipline of showing up, holding a role over decades, and keeping a distinction between personal preference and public duty.

Community service taught me a smaller version of the same lesson: people stay when leaders are consistent. Sustainability work asks for the same quality. Teams need someone who can keep going after the announcement is over.
